The spring lives inside the barrel that the band wraps around, and it may be that the barrel needs winding. I have never actually carried out a major repair on any of my machines! But maybe I can point you in the right direction. That first picture is so sad! :( I hope you can get the frame fixed somehow.įirst, disclaimer: I AM NOT A TYPEWRITER REPAIR EXPERT. Maybe I'm missing something and that's not the issue, so I decided to come here and ask you guys, since it's my first time and I don't know what the hell I'm doing.

The band is intact, however, I can not seem to find a spring. I checked the general cleaning/repair guide on the sidebar, which said to check the band and the spring. It moves freely (some resistance to movement, but not much) to the right and also to the left if the carriage release lever is held down. Right now, I can press a key and then manually push it and it'll move over one spot and then lock in place, but won't go automatically. All I need to do, past oiling and cleaning it up, is get the carriage to actually advance on it's own after a keypress. I've managed to realign the carriage so far.

So I just bought my first typewriter off of and it came in in less than stellar condition (not exactly how they described it, plus half of the metal surrounding the keyboard broke off in shipping).
